In the wake of the December 26 tsunami, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawarta has focused his government’s efforts on restoring the lucrative tourist industry, which contributes 6 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product. The suffering of those who have lost friends and family members, together with the plight of villagers who have lost their homes and possessions, has been relegated to second place.

As of last week, Thai officials reported that 5,305 people had been killed by the tsunami. Of these 1,792 were Thais and 1,329 were foreigners—the national origin of the remaining 2,516 is uncertain. In addition, between 3,500 and 3,600 people were still listed as missing, about one third of whom were foreigners. The province of Phangnga, where over 4,000 bodies have been recovered, was the hardest hit. The number of homeless is not clear but runs into the thousands.

Governments across South East Asia are counting the mounting economic costs of the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and nervously awaiting the results of their containment efforts. While the number of cases is relatively small compared to other disasters that have struck the region, the character of the disease and the uncertainly it has generated have had an economic impact out of all proportion to the immediate effects of SARS on public health.

World Health Organisation (WHO) figures show that, as of May 24, Singapore has been the worst hit, with 206 reported cases and 31 deaths. Indonesia has reported two cases and no deaths; Malaysia eight cases and two deaths; the Philippines 12 cases and two deaths; Thailand eight cases and two deaths and Vietnam 63 cases and five deaths.

As the thick crude gushing from the broken well in the Gulf of Mexico coats wetlands along the Louisiana coast, reliable figures on the extent of the spill are precious and few. BP has withheld crucial information, while the Obama administration is following BP’s lead in insisting that clean-up efforts are not dependent on knowing how much oil is entering the Gulf.

These efforts are further hindered by the lack of current data about coastal areas produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

I’m here for other children.
I’m here because I care.
I’m here because children everywhere are suffering and because forty thousand people die each day from hunger.
I’m here because those people are mostly children.
We have got to understand that the poor are all around us and we are ignoring them.
We have got to understand that these deaths are preventable.
We have got to understand that people in third world countries think and care and smile and cry just like us.
We have got to understand that they dream our dreams and we dream theirs.
We have got to understand that they are us. We are them.
My dream is to stop hunger by the year 2000.
My dream is to give the poor a chance.
My dream is to save the 40,000 people who die each day.
My dream can and will come true if we all look into the future and see the light that shines there.
If we ignore hunger, that light will go out.
If we all help and work together, it will grow and burn free with the potential of tomorrow.

As part of its business transformation program and corporate identity brand refresh program, on Thursday, 27 May 2010, Garuda Indonesa presented its new employee uniform. The uniform’s official launching took place in the Bali Room of Hotel Kempinski, Jakarta.

During the evening, male and female cabin crew uniforms were shown. For the female crew, the uniform takes the form of a modified kebaya that was inspired by the batik motif Parang Gondosuli. The motif symbolizes the ‘Fragrant Ray of Life’ (Sinar Kehidupan yang Harum) and endows the wearer with elegance. The uniform consists of three colors, namely aqua green which implies sophistication, the tropics and freshness; orange to suggest warmth, friendliness and energy; and blue which symbolizes dependability, trustworthiness, immortality and tranquility.
